Earth Science: Rocks Form in Different Ways Week 5

So none of the books I was looking for this week were available, and as such we opted just to play with the experiments in the book.  I mean who doesn't love food science!

So here is our counter space, all in the name of science this week.  I love it! :)

Monday

Lollipops were fun but definitely a spectator sport for Giraffe - that candy mess got hot! LOL!  We cooled them but didn't get the respected results, possibly because I halfed the recipe.  The girls definitely did not like the sugar on a stick! LOL!  (fun to make - not very tasty!)

Tuesday

Giraffe enjoyed making the layer cake.  We have peanut allergies in the house and considered using pretzels instead of nuts, but opted for Raisins instead.

Wednesday

These were fun.  Turned out a little like Biscotti.  Read the description from the book to Giraffe while we assembled them, and she correctly surmised that the flour was kind of like the limestone.  We'll have enough for snacks for the next couple days.

Earth Science: Properties of Rocks Week 4

Moving Right along!

Thursday

Friday

So we got distracted and ended up doing this our own way.  A fun way that worked for Giraffe.  The books weren't a favourite but we read the basic points and then had fun with testing the rocks.

these were the categories we opted to test for based on a kit From Young Scientists that Ketchup used earlier this year.
Amused by the floating rock (pumice)

Equally amused by the magnetic rock (magnetite - Lodestone)

Earth Science: Earth's Crust & How Soil is Made Weeks 2 & 3

Working on getting back on schedule and doing Science and History together.  So far it is working that we are doing History Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Science is happening Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, if we need an extra day.  It seems to keep things fresh for Giraffe.

Friday

Wednesday (because following schedules doesn't always happen, especially when pre-arranged classes get transfered around. -- Tuesday Giraffe, Daddy and Ketchup collected items for the observations that we made today.  One of Frog's classes got put back a couple hours and ran longer than it should have - so Wednesday became our Science day and we did some History reading too!)

FTR - I've posted links to some of the videos that we use during our lessons.  Some are available at our library and some were present in full online - I found them while searching for more material and the links were available at the time I posted this!

Earth Science: Layers Week 1

Don't love this time of the year.  Things happen, illness happens, everything gets behind and I feel pressured to catch up and then no one is happy, but it is the cycle of our life at this time of the year, so I'm slowing down, sitting back and not forcing things.

Layers

Monday

  • Read Planet Earth/Inside Out by Gail Gibbons.
  • Complete Evan-Moor ScienceWorks for Kids: Geology, Grades 1-3 "The Earth Has Layers: Crust, Mantel, Core - Locate the Layer" activity and worksheet (page 6).

Tuesday

  • Read The Magic School Bus: Inside the Earth by Joanna Cole.
  • Complete Evan-Moor ScienceWorks for Kids: Geology, Grades 1-3 "The Earth Has Layers: Crust, Mantel, Core - A Trip to the Center of the Earth" activity (page 7).

Wednesday

Not a lot of things to take pictures of this week, so please for give the text only post!

Giraffe was not entirely interested in learning about the different layers - so the clay/play dough models didn't happen - it's not her favourite medium so we worked with only the descriptions and the pictures in the Evan Moor book.

Earth Science: Geology Unit

So Giraffe, very much enjoyed the various experiments and activities we did in the Weather Unit, and asked that we keep reading and doing more experiments, so I thought it would be good to keep on going in this direction!  Again, I borrowed some ideas from BlueHouseSchool, changed up some of the library books and bought a kits or two that I thought would fit in with our learning.  In keeping with the format of the last Science Unit I decided I would post my goals again and the units we would hopefully cover.

Evan-Moor Science Works for Kids Series has an eBook on Geology for 1st - 3rd grades (EMC 857i).  It offers a wealth of experiments, demonstrations and activities for hands on learning and I'll be trying to supplement with fun reading materials like we used with the weather unit and suggested reading so that is what we’ll be using as the spine of our Science for the next few weeks.  I hope to be able to update weekly what we did so someone out there in the ether will be able to use it as a jumping point like I did at someone else’s suggestion!  We will cover:

  1. Layers
  2. Earth's Crust
  3. How Soil is Made
  4. Properties of Rocks
  5. Rocks Form in Different Ways
  6. The Incredible Changing Earth
  7. Earth's Resources
  8. Fossils

Again, I hope to make it back and make a link to each of the parts we covered but in case I don’t just keep reading.

Again, this one appears to be a pretty low budget fun unit - with the use of library books, a basic spine and the odd kit here and there.

We're trying to make Science a regular part of Monday-Tuesday and Wednesday Curriculum.

Earth Science: Weather Week 6

Really behind now.  The holidays are crazy around here and we got sick again over the holidays, so even this week we're fighting to make progress.  We're getting tired of weather now, but I think we're in the final stretch so that's not bad!

So without further adieu we will begin our week of Seasons, and hope it moves quickly with fun! :)

Seasons

Monday
  • Read - Sunshine Makes the Seasons by Franklyn M. Branley.
  • Read - Ring of Earth: A Child’s Book of Seasons by Jane Yolen
  • Complete - The Mailbox Investigating Weather, Grades 1-3  "The Seasons: Shining Seasons" (page 34).
  • Watch - Bill Nye the Science Guy: Earth's Seasons DVD by Disney.
We did the experiment from Investigating Weather but followed the one in the Branley book instead, made it easier to explain, but the Giraffe kind of fluffed it off, we've sort of done this one before.  No photos cause it's hard taking photos in the dark when you're using your flashlight on your phone! LOL!

The Branley book was a good explanation on the Seasons, the Yolen book was a beautiful poem for an adult, but a little too long and descriptive for a 6 yr old, I think Giraffe, snored through most of it... remember attention spans are quiet short for many at this point, especially when they'd rather be off playing and having fun! (the Yolen book was recommended by the Investigating Weather book.)
Tuesday
  • Read - Paint a sun in the sky : a first look at the seasons by Claire Llewellyn
  • Read - A Bear for All Seasons by Diane Marcial Fuchs
  • Complete - The Mailbox Investigating Weather, Grades 1-3  "The Seasons: Global Opposites" (page 35).
  • Complete - The Mailbox Investigating Weather, Grades 1-3  "The Seasons: Get Clear on the Hemispheres" worksheet (page 39).
Enjoyed both books today.
Wednesday

Extra Reading
The Reasons for Seasons - Gail Gibbons

YAY!  Weather is done!  This Week dragged.  Boy did it drag... she was totally uninterested in furthering the study of weather or the seasons or anything of that nature.  So on to new things! :)  Thanks for keeping up with us! :)

In case you missed it on the Weather Unit page, there was a 7th week scheduled, but we didn't make it.  We had done forecasting along with our other units, so I didn't see any reason to add a special unit to focus on it.

Earth Science: Weather Week 5

Storms

Things got delayed quite a bit.  So we're a week behind.

Over the weekend, Giraffe posted a couple of Meteorologist items on the DIY.org at this point she is one item away from earning the Meteorology patch.  I love that she understands things enough to explain them in a video or post photos of what she is up to!  DIY patches are just another kinda fun way to cement the ideas a little.

Monday
  • Read - Flash, Crash, Rumble, and Roll by Franklyn M. Branley.
  • Read The Storm Book by Charlotte Zolotow.
  • Complete The Mailbox Investigating Weather, Grades 1-3 "Storms: Lightning Safety" (page 28).   We talked about this, as she wasn't interested in doing the project and time was a little tight.
  • Complete The Mailbox Investigating Weather, Grades 1-3  "Storms: A Thunderstorm Is Building" (page 27).  We've covered this in a couple previous units, more talking than physically doing, so we talked this through really quickly!
  • Complete The Mailbox Investigating Weather, Grades 1-3  "Storms: A Few Words About Weather" (page 27).  This was kinda cute, but again there were other things she was interested in doing, so we talked, and she left and she has a really good handle
  • Watche Bill Nye the Science Guy: Storms DVD by Disney.
As you can see by the comments after each of the things we had planned Giraffe is losing interest in talking about weather.  Many of the things we're discussing we do on a regular basis, like watching the clouds and just talking about what we see happening in them.  This is reaching a little deeper into it, and she's having a tough time staying with it - bored!

Tuesday
  • Read - Hurricane & Tornado by Jack Challoner
  • Read - Otis and the Tornado by Loren Long.
  • Complete The Mailbox Investigating Weather, Grades 1-3  "Storms: A Twister in a Jar" (page 29).
Trying to make a Tornado in a Jar.  (would work better with a Soda bottle but we didn't have any.)
Friday
  • Read Hurricanes! by Gail Gibbons.
  • Read Hurricane by David Wiesner.
  • Read Hurricane by Jonathan London
  • Complete The Mailbox Investigating Weather, Grades 1-3  "Storms: In the Eye of the Storm" (page 28).

Hurricane in a bowl - seeing the effects from the Eye of the Storm!

Earth Science: Weather Week 4

Wind

(All posts before this should be caught up and up to date with photos.)

So  as always things don't go as planned. :) We had planned on spending the week of Thanksgiving getting caught up on our Science-y stuff, but that didn't happen, we got horribly distracted (and not by family, since we had none come by! LOL!)  So we took another slow week, and the Wind got pushed over to this week. :)  (no you are not seeing things, you might have seen the last post got deleted! ya, trying to keep things accurate!)

Monday
Creating Artificial Wind
Giraffe read Can You See the Wind all by herself (since we're working on increasing her reading skills along with understanding of science skills.)  We had a good laugh at The Wind Blew, so today's books were definitely enjoyable!

We didn't have balloons in the house so we used a ziplock bag, to make the artificial wind.

Tuesday
I love Robert Munsch stories - have for a very long time, so any opportunity to read one!  Giraffe didn't share my love for it though.  The Windy Matchup game wasn't really her cup of tea either, but it does explain a point and she got it, so it is now on our table with our weather tools.
Thursday
  • Read The Gates of the Wind by Kathryn Lasky
  • Read the Whirlys & the West Wind by Christine Ross
  • Complete The Mailbox Investigating Weather, Grades 1-3  "Wind: Wonderful Windsocks" (page 23).
Friday
  • Read Wind by Marion Dane Bauer
All in all, this week wasn't really a hit with Giraffe or I.  The books were fun but the projects not so much.  Effective but un-fun.

Earth Science: Weather Experiments Week

We've been battlings colds this week, which has taken all of us down one at a time.  I've been pretending to play nurse but I was the 2nd one that got it, so I've failed miserably!

Part of last week got ended abruptly (though we will/did eventually play catch-up.)  I don't do sick or nurse very well, and am anxious to get back to our schedule program!

For years, I've had at least two Little Labs Weather Kits kicking around the house.  Ketchup used one, and I think this week Giraffe will pull out the other.

So this week, I figured we'd play it slow and catchup what we missed (and fill in the blog) and work on some ways to measure the weather we're seeing.  Stay tuned and I'll add in our devices and experiments throughout the week as we go.  Hopefully we'll get a good variety of weather, that doesn't involve snow (personal bias!) and we'll have fun with it.  Stay tuned!

Monday

So Giraffe, is still under the weather but has little bursts of energy, so we used one of them to check out explore measuring temperature.  Not in the mood to re-invent the thermometer, we used a super big thermometer that I had purchased years ago at Lakeshore LearningI had to run out to the store so we got our super big thermometer and put it on the back deck (in the shade.) About 20 minutes later, when we got back, I had her take a look at it and it showed 61F.  We decided to take an extra reading put the thermometer on the front porch in the full beautiful, glorious sun and it read 76F.

Tuesday

We've got some more bad weather coming in tonight and tomorrow.  Hoping to make some tools today for use tomorrow.  She is still not feeling 100% but she is definitely on the mend.  Today we'll be building an Anemometer and Rain Gauge from the Weather kit.  We've also been identifying them in various locations when we go on drives - sometimes on phone poles, sometimes on buildings - just so she can see them truly in action.

Anemometer, Rain Gauge & Weather Vane
Discovering Humidity
So with the Humidity detector, we filled a glass with cold water and just set it out to get an idea of how much humidty was in the air.  This was after only a few seconds, and considering the rain we're expecting - we're pretty sure it's accurate.

Wednesday

Yesterday while working with the Anemometer, Weather Vane and teeny tiny Rain Gauge in the kit, we made our own rain gauge because we knew it would hold more water and was less likely to blow away.  The empty Rain Gauge was shown on Tuesday right after we made it, but it was too windy to leave outside (15 mph winds)  It did rain a little over night which we didn't record, and it also rained a good deal of the morning (also not recorded,) but as luck would have it, we arrived back from the doctor's just before the heavy rain fell and Giraffe managed to get the gauge out in the nick of time! :)

Homemade Rain Gauge (marbles for added weight)
Just under 2 inches in 2-ish hours

In just over two hours (between 4:25 and 6:30pm) this was the amount of rain we caught.   Giraffe was pretty happy with the results of her rain gauge. We'll just empty it to the bottom line, and put it out again.

Earth Science: Weather Week 3

Precipitation

Monday
Really didn't like the book we chose for today.  Very long and dense for Giraffe who wasn't really interested in reading it or looking at it.  Days of rain do that to a kid!
Tuesday

It has been raining here for days, since Halloween to be exact.  Some days it was a light drizzle, other days it was torrential downpours, other days the clouds would drift in and out and leave a puddle in their wake.  We've been under flood watches and flood alerts as area rivers take in the deluge of 10 days worth of rain.  They're calling for more rain later in the week.  Today we were happy to see the sun and blue sky though.

Last week when Giraffe and I, attempted to make a cloud in a jar (which I have tried 2x in the past) we instead watched the raindrops form on the the bottom of the "lid" of our jar.  The smaller droplets combined together until they were too heavy and then they just fell.  So while we didn't follow the experiment here exactly, we did get to see it in action and talk about it.
  • Read - "Down Comes the Rain" by Franklyn M. Branley.
  • Read - "Listen to the Rain" by Bill Martin.
  • Read - "Come On, Rain" by Karen Hesse.
  • Completed The Mailbox Investigating Weather, Grades 1-3  "Precipitation: Looks Like Rain" (page 15) and "Going Down!" (page 16).
Snowflakes and raindrops, which one falls faster?
Wednesday
Ice Crystals Booklet

Thursday
  • Read - "Snow" by Marion Dane Bauer during reading.
  • Read - "It’s Raining" by Gail Gibbons (wanted "It's Snowing" our library didn't have it.)
  • Read - "Snowflake Bentley" by Jacqueline Briggs Martin

Earth Science: Weather Week 2

Clouds

Monday
The "Sector 7" picture book was a fun look.  I've never been good at choosing picture books, so this was a neat thing to Giraffe.  We tried to cook up a cloud, but have never managed to make it work, we did get to see it dripping with rain though! So no exciting photos today! :(
Tuesday

This is the actual photo of what Giraffe was supposed to do today, and as you can see Frog and Ketchup got in on the action - everyone loves to play with shaving cream here! :)

The experiment for today didn't seem as exciting as I'd hoped, so remembering I had seen the shaving cream rain somewhere, I decided to give that a shot, and it proved amusing to Giraffe.  She watched as the Food colouring made it's way through the shaving cream to the bottom of the cloud and then produced a rainbow of rain!   It was neat to see how it the food colour just hung there until it accumulated enough to drift down.

    Earth Science: Weather Week 1

In year's past, Giraffe listened as Ketchup learned about the Weather, and designed weather instruments, but she was never interested enough to participate or answer questions, so much of this is new to her.  We'll be working on expanding her vocabulary and working knowledge of various key points about weather.

    The Water Cycle

    Monday
Magic Schoolbus Kicks Up a Storm
(The Stewart book was dry and not very interesting - Giraffe lost interest pretty quickly here)

    Tuesday
(The Trueit book was also dry and not very interesting - we ended up going straight to the Bill Nye video which Giraffe and Ketchup found a little strange and simply reiterated what we watched yesterday but in a more grown up approach.)

    Wednesday
Building a Water Cycle in a Bottle
    Water Cycle in a Bottle
(Loved "A Drop Around the World" but would recommend if you can get your hands on the actual book, you'll enjoy it better. The Trueit book was also dry and not very interesting - we ended up going straight to the Bill Nye video which Giraffe and Ketchup found a little strange and simply reiterated what we watched yesterday but in a more grown up approach.)

    Thursday
(the Wonderful Puddle project was fun!  Definitely an exciting splash of colour on our delightfully rainy day.)

    Earth Science: Weather Unit

Themailbox.com has an eBook on Weather for 1st -  3rd grades (TEC 30224).  It doesn’t offer a lot in the way guided lesson plans but has a wealth of experiments, demonstrations, activities and suggested reading so that is what we’ll be using as the spine of our Science for the next few weeks.  I hope to be able to update weekly what we did so someone out there in the ether will be able to use it as a jumping point like I did at someone else’s suggestion!  We will cover:
I hope to make it back and make a link to each of the parts we covered but in case I don’t just keep reading.

Also, I'd like to thank BlueHouseSchool for the jumping off points.  I used a lot of the suggestions she made when working with her daughter  - plus what was available to me locally to make it fun for Giraffe.  All together, this was a pretty low budget unit, which provided a ton of entertainment.

    Moving Right Along

Apologies for the gaps in the posts here.  I've been horribly side-tracked by FB lately and am just coming back into my own.  The recent changes there did it for me, and I've come to realize that I liked being able to come here and check out our progress and easily review things from the past.  So ya, I think I'm back to stay this time! LOL!

When we left off:  my 5 yr old was just beginning 1st grade materials.  She was not reading though we had begun 100 Easy Lessons.  Today I am pleased to say that she has just completed the 100 Easy Lessons book.

    YAY!! CONGRATS Miss S! :)

We have started working our way through the Explode the Code Books.  And I'm just pleased as punch that we've made it this far. She is reading way more fluidly and fluently than I did at her age! LOL!  So there in itself I consider our work so far a success! :)

    She seems to love math.

Our first few weeks with 1st grade were a struggle.  She is a high energy kid, who loves to move and is never still for long, unless something so occupies her mind that she is too distracted to move! LOL!  I read a book over the summer "How to get your child off the refrigerator and on to learning" and OMG if S isn't that child!  Our first day of school she was on the chair, on the table, and the floor, falling off the chair, under the table, on the floor, before we had even gotten past the first page of what we were doing.  I spent far too much time wrangling her in the early days, trying to get her to sit and work with me, yelling and getting very mad.   Finally, I plead with my dh and my sis and my mum for ideas... and the best advice I got was from dh.  We decided to plan our school work in snippets of time, we started off with 15 minutes.  And then she got to play for 45, ya I know a little excessive but well it worked.  We are now down to 30 mins work and 30 mins of play!  (which leaves time for the other 2 -  15 for littlest and 15 for the oldest if she needs it!)  We do 3-4 subjects a day, depending on her attention span, and my ability to keep it together too!   So things are working out slowly and we are making great progress.  We do struggle some days.

We took all our school materials off to the beach for the month of September, where we had an awesome time.  The girls spent some good time on the beach enjoying the sand and surf, and learning so much about marine life and the stars, and so much much more.  I wish I could say I was glad to return home, but I was not.  I have much work to do here to get thing organized and feel better about this place.

So there you have it.  That is what we've been up to!
