• Watch The Magic School Bus: Catches a Wave! DVD ("Rocks and Rolls" episode) by Scholastic from Netflix.

Wednesday

• Read Volcanoes by Franklyn M. Branley.
• Complete Evan-Moor ScienceWorks for Kids: Geology, Grades 1-3 "The Surface of the Earth Is Always Changing - Volcanoes" (page 55).
• Watched Bill Nye the Science Guy: Volcanoes DVD by Disney.

Thursday

• Read Earthquakes by Franklyn M. Branley.
• Complete Evan-Moor ScienceWorks for Kids: Geology, Grades 1-3 "The Surface of the Earth Is Always Changing - Earthquakes" (page 56).
• Watched Bill Nye the Science Guy: Earthquakes DVD by Disney.

Earth Science: Rocks Form in Different Ways Week 5

So none of the books I was looking for this week were available, and as such we opted just to play with the experiments in the book.  I mean who doesn't love food science!

So here is our counter space, all in the name of science this week.  I love it! :)

Monday

• Complete Evan-Moor ScienceWorks for Kids: Geology,Grades 1-3 "Rocks Are Formed In Different Ways - Lollipop Rocks" (page 37).

 

Lollipops were fun but definitely a spectator sport for Giraffe - that candy mess got hot! LOL!  We cooled them but didn't get the respected results, possibly because I halfed the recipe.  The girls definitely did not like the sugar on a stick! LOL!  (fun to make - not very tasty!)

Tuesday

• Complete Evan-Moor ScienceWorks for Kids: Geology, Grades 1-3 "Rocks Are Formed In Different Ways - Lot-O-Layers" (page 39).

Giraffe enjoyed making the layer cake.  We have peanut allergies in the house and considered using pretzels instead of nuts, but opted for Raisins instead.

Wednesday

• Complete Evan-Moor ScienceWorks for Kids: Geology, Grades 1-3 "Rocks Are Formed In Different Ways - Munchies" (page 38).

 

These were fun.  Turned out a little like Biscotti.  Read the description from the book to Giraffe while we assembled them, and she correctly surmised that the flour was kind of like the limestone.  We'll have enough for snacks for the next couple days.

Thursday

• Complete Evan-Moor ScienceWorks for Kids: Geology, Grades 1-3 "Rocks Are Formed In Different Ways - Summary Activities" mini book (page 40).
• Complete Evan-Moor ScienceWorks for Kids: Geology,, Grades 1-3 "Rocks Are Formed In Different Ways - Make Conglomerate Rocks" (pages 41). The version we used was entitled "Making a Rock at Home" (pages 30-31)

• Read – If You Find a Rock by Peggy Christian
• Complete Evan-Moor ScienceWorks for Kids: Geology, Grades 1-3 "Rocks Have Different Properties - Colors and Patterns" and "Size and Weight" (page 29).
• Reread "Moh's Scale of Hardness" (pages 16-17) from Let's Go Rock Collecting by Roma Gans.
• Complete Evan-Moor ScienceWorks for Kids: Geology, Grades 1-3 "Rocks Have Different Properties - Hardness" and "Buoyancy" (page 30).
• Read Rocks and Minerals by Steve Tomecek.
• Complete Evan-Moor ScienceWorks for Kids: Geology, Grades 1-3 "Rocks Have Different Properties - Rock Properties" (page 31).

So we got distracted and ended up doing this our own way.  A fun way that worked for Giraffe.  The books weren't a favourite but we read the basic points and then had fun with testing the rocks.

these were the categories we opted to test for based on a kit From Young Scientists that Ketchup used earlier this year.

Earth Science: Earth's Crust & How Soil is Made Weeks 2 & 3

Working on getting back on schedule and doing Science and History together.  So far it is working that we are doing History Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Science is happening Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, if we need an extra day.  It seems to keep things fresh for Giraffe.

Friday

• Complete Evan-Moor ScienceWorks for Kids: Geology, Grades 1-3 "The Earth's Crust Is Made of Rock and Soil - What Is on the Earth's Crust?" activity and worksheet (pages 17-18).
• Watched Bill Nye the Science Guy: Earth's Crust  by Disney.

Wednesday (because following schedules doesn't always happen, especially when pre-arranged classes get transfered around. -- Tuesday Giraffe, Daddy and Ketchup collected items for the observations that we made today.  One of Frog's classes got put back a couple hours and ran longer than it should have - so Wednesday became our Science day and we did some History reading too!)

We didn't have any kraft paper but had received a few workbooks and packages with loose paper packaging this week so I snagged the paper and let her have fun with it.
